Find meaning and connection in your everyday life…

You might be feeling stuck or feeling like you’re not quite living the life you want to. Maybe there are narratives about who you are or who you are supposed to be that makes life painful.

There are so many ways of finding joy and meaning in life. Therapy is not about identifying what you’re doing “wrong” and “fixing” it. Therapy is a process through which we curiously learn about who you are and what you want for your life. Then, we look at what you’re doing now that is working for you (moving you toward what is meaningful) and what you’re doing that’s not working for you (moving you away from what is meaningful).

I absolutely love neuroscience! Our current understanding of the neurobiology of the brain supports what we have intuitively known- relationships are essential for meaningful living. We all need to feel connected to others. Unfortunately, many people have been harmed within the context of relationships. This can make it difficult to trust ourselves, others, and the world.

This is a partnership between us. We will work together, grounded in the neuroscience, to support you in building a meaningful life.

AREA OF FOCUS

Complex Trauma

Complex trauma refers to experiences of repeated trauma, often in childhood. These chronic experiences of trauma are often perpetrated by someone who is in a position of power, someone who we both depend on for survival and who is also terrifying. Treatment provides comprehensive support for individuals who have experienced long-term and multifaceted traumatic events, fostering healing and resilience.

PTSD

PTSD can develop from single event traumatic experiences or chronic, long term interpersonal trauma. Evidenced-based therapies are tailored to address the unique needs of individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder, promoting recovery and restoring quality of life.

Depression

Depression can feel different for different people. In general, depression feels like the world has lost color. It can be difficult to find anything meaningful. This can result in lack of motivation, low mood, difficulty experiencing pleasant emotions, poor sleep, and difficulty concentrating. Therapy empowers individuals experiencing depression by assisting them in finding meaning, balance, and renewed engagement in their lives.

Anxiety

Anxiety is that feeling of dread, like at any moment something terrible might happen. Anxiety often comes up because there are thoughts and feelings that we are trying to avoid or don’t know how to make sense of. Therapy supports individuals in exploring their anxiety and the underlying experiences that support/drive the anxiety. The focus is not on getting rid of anxiety but instead allowing it to come along in our pocket as we refocus our attention on what really matters to us. The paradox is that the more we try to get rid of anxiety, the greater the anxiety becomes. As we let go of the struggle against anxiety, and pivot our attention toward meaningful, values-based parts of ourselves and our lives, the smaller anxiety becomes. Therapy focuses on helping you increase your ability to accept experience, ground in the present moment, and live in a way that is consistent with your values.

Personality Disorders

Personality disorders most often arise out of complex, childhood trauma. They are a way of being in the world that enabled people to survive terror and helplessness. Those ways of being become barriers when we try to build a life outside of trauma. We suddenly find that that way of being no longer works in the new life we are building or want to build. Therapy focuses on a deeper exploration of who you want to be in this world, narratives that create barriers, and narratives that are health promoting and will support the life you want to build for yourself.

Relational Stress

Relationships and authentic connection are essential for healthy living. And while relationships bring meaning and joy, they can also be immensely challenging. Therapy offers guidance and tools to navigate relational challenges, promoting healthier connections and enhancing overall well-being.

Spiritual Abuse

Spiritual abuse may present itself in many forms and can be present in any system of belief. I programs provide a safe space to address the profound impact of spiritual abuse, restoring inner strength and fostering spiritual well-being. The goal of recovery from spiritual abuse is to reclaim your own meaning making system, learn to trust your judgment again (or for the first time), and build self-compassion.

Extremism/Cults

Extremism and cultic groups are characterized by a form of leadership that co-ops reality with the use of coercive control. Therapy, education, support groups, and consultation services support individuals affected by extremism or cult involvement, facilitating increased understanding of cultic dynamics and mechanisms of control. Therapy aims to deconstruct the dominant narrative of the group and rebuild a narrative that reclaims your sense of agency and your identity. For those raised in cultic groups, it may be building a sense of self for the first time.

Cult-Affected Families:

Education and consultation services provide guidance and support to families navigating the challenges of having a loved one in a cult, fostering understanding of cult dynamics and the unique approaches needed to support your loved one.

Attachment/Trauma-Focused Therapy

Attachment/trauma-focused therapy is an evidenced based approach grounded in interpersonal neurobiology. Trauma is most often relational, meaning the terrifying experience occurred within the context of a relationship with another person(s). One of the most profound challenges is that while this kind of trauma makes us distrustful of other people and the world, healing can only occur through relationship. Attachment therapy focuses on repairing our ability to connect, experience vulnerability, and build healthy, secure relationships.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT does not presume that there is an objectively right or wrong way to live your life. When we explore your life, we will be exploring it through the lens of your values (and if you’re not sure what your values are, that’s okay! We’ll figure it out along the way together). Distress is part of modern life. We do not live in a society that is structured for whole health. While we cannot get rid of distress, we can keep it from becoming suffering through the development of psychological flexibility.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT focuses on four areas of experience- mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT offers concrete skills to help you develop a more effective relationship with your emotions, tolerate distress when needed (and not tolerate distress that is not needed), and build healthy relationships.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is an approach that emphasizes the use of curiosity, active listening, and integrative communication to discover what each person wants for their lives (goals, values, perspectives, culture). It focuses on protecting and encouraging autonomy while promoting authentic change.
